Floyd County Democrats Announce Scholarship Recipients

Anna Hsaio and Mackenzie Gahan selected as this year’s recipients

NEW ALBANY, May 28, 2019 – The Floyd County Democratic Party (FCDP) has announced their 2019 scholarship recipients. This year’s recipients are Anna Hsaio and Mackenzie Gahan, both students at New Albany High School.

“The Floyd County Democratic Party is committed to the success of highly motivated students who want to continue their academic career beyond high school,” stated Floyd County Democratic Party Chair Adam Dickey. “This year’s recipients came on high recommendation from educational and community leaders, reflected academic excellence, and a dedication to civic service. We are proud of our inaugural recipients for their hard work and dedication.”

This is the first year for the scholarships and the party anticipates continuing it in the future. The newly created scholarship awards each student a $1,000 non-renewable scholarship to an academic institution of their choice.

“The party received several quality applications for the new scholarship,” stated Scholarship Committee Chair LaMicra Martin. “The scoring process was very competitive making it very difficult to select our recipients.”

Applications were reviewed on past school performance, positive contributions to the community, as well as a written essay on a designated subject determined by the FCDP Scholarship Committee.

Anna Hsiao will be attending Indiana University Bloomington while MacKenzie Gahan will be attending Indiana University Southeast. Anna is a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council, Model UN, and Thespian Club. Mackenzie is a NAHS Cheerleader, a member of the French Club, and New Albany Theatre. She also volunteers for Blessings in a Backpack and with the New Albany Children's Theatre.

“We are incredibly proud of our recipients and all of the students that applied,” added Dickey. “We look forward to seeing their progress as they continue their educational pursuits.”
