Anthony Toran selected to serve on Floyd County Council
Caucus selection made following passing of former Councilman Tom Pickett
NEW ALBANY, August 9, 2021 – Floyd County Democratic Party Chair Adam Dickey has announced the election of Anthony Toran to the position of Floyd County Council, District #1. Toran fills a vacancy created following the passing of Thomas Pickett who died July 10th following a short illness.
“Tom Pickett was a dedicated public servant, and our thoughts remain with the Pickett family,” stated Party Chair Adam Dickey. “While it is difficult to move forward without Tom’s leadership, we are grateful to Rev. Anthony (Tony) Toran for taking up the Council position and know he will work hard to serve the citizens of the First District.”
Under Indiana law, the political party of the deceased officeholder is responsible for filling the vacancy. Precinct Committee members from the First District caucused Saturday morning to make the selection. “I have a deep appreciation for public service, and I realize my responsibility to make Floyd County a better place to live, work and raise a family,” stated Toran. “I am excited about this new area of public service.”
Toran, who is also a Pastor at Galatian Baptist Church, has served in several public service capacities throughout his career, including with the Floyd County Prosecutor’s Office, the Floyd County Solid Waste District, the City of New Albany, and the New Albany Housing Authority. He was officially sworn-in to the office earlier today by Floyd County Circuit Court Judge J. Terrence Cody. Toran, who is also the first African American to serve on the Floyd County Council, will serve for the remainder of the four-year term set to expire on December 31, 2022.
“I think Tony brings a new voice to our county government.” Dickey added. “I believe he offers the right experience and perspective to help move our community forward and build better policy.”
