Statement on the Passing of Tom Pickett

Four -Term County Councilman passed after brief illness

NEW ALBANY, July 12, 2021 – Floyd County Democratic Party Chair Adam Dickey made the following statement in regard to the passing of County Council member Thomas Pickett:

“Our party is deeply saddened by the passing of County Councilman Tom Pickett,” stated Dickey. “Pickett, who was first elected to the county fiscal body in 2006,was known for his kind demeanor and gregarious personality. In his own words, he ‘loved’ to help people and set a true example of servant leadership for others.”

“During his time on the council, he worked to be a steadfast voice for fiscal responsibility. He advocated for smart use of hospital sale proceeds for projects and other community investments, backed funding to improve and ensure public safety, supported COVID relief measures, and endorsed funding to ensure voter access and participation. Tom served on several boards and civic groups including as President of the Community Corrections Advisory Board, on the Sheriff’s bargaining board, on the Purdue Extension Board, and as a member and President of the Kiwanis Club of Historic New Albany.”

“A teacher and auto mechanic by profession, he was one of those unique individuals driven to help others - from fixing a car to answering a constituent concern. Even during his late illness, he never lost that spirit and continued to be upbeat about our community. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Roz Picket, and their extended family and friends during this time of grief and mourning.”

The visitation will be held at Naville & Seabrook Funeral Home at 1119. E. Market Street in New Albany on Wednesday, July 14, 1 – 8 p.m. The funeral service will also take place at Naville & Seabrook Funeral Home at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 15.
