Deanna McLaughlin selected to serve on New Albany City Council
Caucus selection made following passing of former Councilman Pat McLaughlin
NEW ALBANY, July 7, 2021 – Floyd County Democratic Party Chair Adam Dickey has announced the election of Deanna McLaughlin to the position of New Albany City Council, District #4. McLaughlin fills a vacancy created following the passing of Patrick McLaughlin, her late husband, who died June 6th following a short illness.
“While our heart still aches for the loss of Councilman Pat McLaughlin, we are excited to see Deanna step forward into this new role,” stated Dickey. “Politics is a labor of love in many ways. It’s love of your community, love of what you can build in your community. Pat exhibited that very well, and I think that’s really what’s driven Deanna.”
Under Indiana law, the political party of the deceased officeholder is responsible for filling the vacancy. Precinct Committee members from the Fourth District caucused yesterday evening to make the selection.
“I want to continue to make improvements to our beautiful city and to be as involved as I can in making productive things happen for our residents,” said McLaughlin. “I really do care about people and if someone has a problem, I’m going to be right there to help them solve it.”
McLaughlin, whose background is in retail sales and services, was officially sworn-in to the office earlier today by Floyd Superior Court III Judge Maria Granger. She will serve for the remainder of the four-year term set to expire on December 31, 2023.
McLaughlin will also add another female voice to the City Council, joining First District Councilwoman Jennie Collier.
“I think Deanna will offer a fresh voice in that she’s now the second woman to be on the current city council.” Dickey added. “I think that’s a perspective that we need more of in our community and will help build better policy.”
