Statement on the Passing of Larry Schad

Prominent attorney served as New Albany City Judge

NEW ALBANY, March 19, 2021 – Floyd County Democratic Party Chair Adam Dickey made the following statement in regard to the passing of former New Albany City Judge and local attorney Larry Schad:

“Today we are deeply saddened by the passing of local attorney and former New Albany City Judge Larry Schad. Larry, known for his keen legal mind, generous personality, and larger than life presence, was a dear friend and invested community member.”

“Larry was elected as New Albany City Judge in 1971 and served a four year term from 1972 – 1975. Hearing a caseload stemming from ordinance violations and misdemeanor offenses, he worked to be innovative as a judge adopting community service options in lieu of traditional penalties. This included a program with the local Red Cross that allowed those guilty of vehicular speeding to donate blood in lieu of monetary fines.”

“A stand-out lineman on the New Albany Football team, he also played college football for the University of Kentucky, was a Vietnam military veteran, and served on area non-profit boards. His long-standing legal practice helped many find justice through the court system, but his legacy will forever be wrapped in the compassion and warmth he showed others. He was a man with an immeasurably big heart.”

“Our party extends our heartfelt sympathy to Larry’s wife, Judith, as well as his children and extended family members during this most difficult time.”
