Statement on the Passing of John Wilcox

Former public servant served as Democratic Party Chair from 2009 - 2013

NEW ALBANY, January 5, 2021 – Floyd County Democratic Party Chair Adam Dickey made the following statement in regard to the passing of former Floyd County Democratic Party Chair John Wilcox:

“It is with great sadness that I was informed of the passing of former Floyd County Democratic Party Chair John Wilcox. Wilcox, who led the local party from 2009 – 2013, also served in numerous government and civic positions and was a candidate for public office on multiple occasions.”

“John never stopped working to make our community better. A trusted advisor to many in local and state politics, he could be counted on to give frank assessments and provided unwavering support in the face of difficult challenges. Always quick with both wit and wisdom, John was ever the gentleman and carried himself humbly despite a lifetime of accomplishment.”

“Beginning his career as an educator for the local school corporation, John transitioned to public service in the early 1970s first as an Assistant to the Mayor in New Albany, followed by a posting as a Congressional aide for U.S. Senator Vance Hartke. He often recounted tales of this early service with younger party members to impart with them both history and life lessons.”

“John would later serve in the City of Louisville’s Public Works Department and as an Economic Development Officer for the Louisville / Jefferson County Office of Economic Development. In 1999 he returned to the City of New Albany as Human Resource Director, served as President of the Board of Works, and later as the Director of Child Support for the Floyd County Prosecutor’s Office. Following his retirement, he continued to stay active in the community through several civic organizations, was elect Democratic Party Chair, and following his service was awarded the Party’s William C. Cochran Award for distinguished service. He continued to be an active member of the party serving as a precinct committee person and on the board of the Floyd County Democratic Men’s Club.”

“Even during the COVID Pandemic and in declining health, John found ways to help candidates for public office, support community charitities, and advocate for important civic inniatives. He was a champion for our community, a true-blue Democrat, and a dear personal friend and advisor who will be greatly missed.”

“Our party extends our heartfelt sympathy to John’s wife, Lynda, his son, John Cletus Wilcox, and his extended family and friends during this most difficult time.”

Funeral arrangements are pending at this time.
