State Senator Shelli Yoder to keynote Democratic Party Dinner
Annual event honors former U.S. Senator & Associate Justice Sherman Minton
NEW ALBANY, October 27, 2021 – The Floyd County Democratic Party has announced details for their 2021 Sherman Minton Dinner. The annual event honors former U.S. Senator and Supreme Court Justice Sherman Minton and will be held on Wednesday, November 10th at 6:00 p.m. at The Grand Theater, 138 E. Market Street, New Albany. The keynote speaker will be Indiana State Senator and Assistant Minority Caucus Chair Shelli Yoder.
“This past year, we’ve seen our Democratic legislators deliver for Hoosiers across our state and Senator Yoder has been a critical champion in those efforts,” stated Party Chair Adam Dickey. “Through the efforts of Senator Yoder and with the assistance of the American Rescue Plan, our communities are seeing transformational investments such as $250 million in broadband internet, fully funded public schools with a first in a decade pay increase for our educators, critical assistance grants for small businesses, and increased funding for community, mental health, and addiction services.”
Yoder, who was elected to the Indiana State Senate in the 2020 election, represents District 40. She is a senior lecturer at Indiana University Kelly School of Business and previously served on the Monroe County Council from 2013 to 2019. She has served on the Board of the South Central Community Action Program, including the Head Start Policy Council, and the Monroe County Opioid Commission. In 2017, she co-founded and co-chaired the statewide-award-winning South Central Indiana Opioid Summit to address and provide resources to combat the opioid addiction epidemic in Indiana.
As part of her remarks at the dinner, Yoder is expected to highlight the importance of the American Rescue Plan in Indiana and discuss the stakes in next year’s general election.
“Our community is positioned to see tremendous opportunities over the next decade,” added Dickey. “But to achieve this success we must come together as a community, reject extreme partisanship and false culture wars, and focus on common sense measures that help Hoosier build a better life for them and their families – this is the Democratic Party vision for our state.”
The party will also present the 2021 William C. Cochran Award at the dinner. Named in honor of former State Representative William Cochran, this annual honor is awarded to the recipient for his or her sustained contributions to the local party. Past recipients have included elected officials, former party leaders, precinct committee members, and activists. Last year’s award recipient was former Floyd County Prosecutor and local attorney Nick Stein.
