Gubernatorial Candidate Woody Myers to keynote Democratic Party Virtual Sherman Minton Celebration
Virtual Event to feature Local Democratic Party Candidates
NEW ALBANY, October 12, 2020 – The Floyd County Democratic Party has announced that they will host a Virtual Sherman Minton Celebration in lieu of its annual fundraising dinner as a result of the COVID-19 Pandemic. The annual event honors former U.S. Senator and Supreme Court Justice Sherman Minton and will be held on Wednesday, October 14, 2020 at 6:30 p.m. via Zoom video link.
“COVID-19 has impacted much of our community’s planned activities and events,” stated Party Chair Adam Dickey. “We may not be able to join together in person, but we can continue to spotlight our Democratic Party candidates virtually and we are pleased to welcome Gubernatorial candidate Woody Myers as a special guest to our event.”
Myers is a former State Health Commissioner and medical doctor. As part of his remarks during the event, he is expected to highlight critical issues in the 2020 campaign for Governor, including the state’s COVID-19 response and the economic recovery as well as education policy. The event will also feature the party’s candidates for local office.
“We think it important to give our candidates every opportunity to make their case to the voters of Floyd County,” added Dickey. “They are the most experienced, the most prepared, and have the best judgement to lead our community forward in the face of the challenges brought by the COVID-19 Pandemic and a growing community.”
The party will also present the 2020 William C. Cochran Award during the virtual event. Named in honor of former State Representative William Cochran, this annual honor is awarded to the recipient for his or her sustained contributions to the local party. Past recipients have included elected officials, former party leaders, precinct committee members, and activists. Last year’s award recipient was former educator and Democratic Women’s Caucus Chair Janey Willman.
Those who are interested in participating in the event can learn more by contacting Democratic Party Headquarters at 812-725-2020 or by registering online to www.floyddems.org. The virtual event is free to individuals, although sponsorships are available.
