Learn more about becoming a Precinct Committee Person
Updated: 1/11/25
Let’s help your Floyd Co. Democratic Party accomplish great things for our community!
What is a Precinct?
A precinct is the smallest political unit in the county. Used as an organizational tool, legislative bodies use the precinct to establish election districts (Ex: State Legislative Districts) and help mark other political boundaries, such as a municipal boundary. Thought of another way, the precinct is YOUR neighborhood. It is the neighbors, businesses, civic centers, and other venues around you.
What is a Precinct Committee Person?
Political parties use the precinct as an important organizational tool with each precinct having a Chair and a Vice Chair who, with their counterparts from other precincts, make up our County Committee or the leadership of our Floyd County Democratic Party.
As a Precinct Committee Person, your task is to help build the party and organize your precinct. As someone who know the people, the schools, businesses, and community centers, you’ll report back to the party on issues impacting your area, interact with neighbors to register them to vote, and share information on candidates for public office. Being a precinct person, you’ll have an opportunity to help guide our party and improve your neighborhood.
What are the duties of a Precinct Committee Person?
The precinct committeeperson has several key duties under State Party Rules. These include:
Polling residents (Ex: Canvass Door-to-door / Phone Bank);
Registering voters;
Maintaining a current poll list of voters (VAN);
Identifying and assisting absentee voters to register;
Promoting Party candidates;
Operating an election day organization (GOTV)
Encouraging voting by persons preferring Democratic Party Candidates;
Recommending persons for the precinct election board;
Recruiting volunteers for the Party;
Attending training and other party-building activities;
Reporting periodically on the state of the Party to the county chair or his or her designee.
Don’t worry if this list sounds overwhelming. Many precinct committee persons have started out a volunteers on local campaigns and over time developed their own skills and systems for assisting the party. Our party provides regular training to assist precinct committee persons and many specialize in tasks or activities that play to their strong suit. We also appreciate that everyone has unique life and family situations allowing them to serve in this volunteer role. As such, we work with our Precinct Committee Persons to match up their effort with their ability to volunteer.
How do I become a Precinct Committee Person?
Each voting precinct elects its Precinct Committee Chair in the Democratic Primary during the mid-term election (Ex: 2022 & 2026). The elected precinct committee Chair selects a Vice Chair to serve with them. To ensure equality, party rules require the Precinct Person to be a different sex than that of the Chair (Ex: Man / Women / Non-Binary). If there is a vacancy in one of these positions, the Party Chair, elected by all the Precinct Committee Persons to lead the County Party, can appoint an individual to serve out the remaining term of office.
To become a Precinct Committee Person, you should meet the following requirements:
Be a registered voter in Floyd County.
Be a Democrat in good standing.
Be committed to working for the Democratic Party, its candidates, and Democratic officeholders.
