Statement on Primary Election Results
Fall match-up to pit moderate Democrats against hard-liner Republicans
NEW ALBANY, May 8, 2024 – The Floyd County Democratic Party released the following statement following the results of the 2024 Primary Election:
“Last night's election results have illustrated a clear difference between the parties and their candidates for public office,” stated Erica Lawrence, Vice Chair of the Floyd County Democratic Party. “While Democratic candidates represent a moderate, common-sense course, Republicans selected party hard-liners dedicated to a more draconian view on government.”
“While Democrats stand in favor of quality customer service open and accessibility to the public, support fiscally sensible fire-based EMS, and making critical public safety investments, Republicans continue to restrict access to government services, waste taxpayer funds on fruitless projects, and dwell in a swamp of corruption and scandal.”
WOMEN LARGELY PURGED FROM REPUBLICAN PARTY TICKET
“Republicans also ousted two prominent women from public service in yesterday’s primary,” added Lawrence.
Lt. Governor Suzanne Crouch was defeated in the Gubernatorial primary while incumbent County Councilwoman Connie Moon was defeated for re-election to the County Council.
“As a result of Moon’s loss, the only woman remaining on the Republican ticket for a county office is incumbent Recorder Lois Endris, who was unopposed in the primary,” she added. “While Congresswoman Erin Houchin and State Representative Karen Englemen survived challenges for Congressional and State office, even with those candidates added in the collective fall ticket, 81% of the Republican candidates are male compared to a 50% split in the collective Democratic ticket.”
DEMOCRATS REMAIN UNIFIED, EXPRESS GRATITUDE
“Our party wishes to thank all the voters for coming out in yesterday's primary Election,” added Lawrence. “We also appreciate the numerous poll workers and other volunteers that supported the election.”
"Looking forward to November, our candidates are unified and ready to serve our community,” she added. “We look forward to the General Election, earning the votes of our fellow citizens, and making our community the best place to live, work and raise a family.”
